It's time for primary care to join the lifestyle psychiatry movement

At ASLM, we think it’s time for primary care to join the lifestyle psychiatry movement.

Join us at Mental Health Reimagined to explore the many ways in which Lifestyle Medicine can be utilised in the treatment of mood disorders, and how it can be prescribed within the limitations of the current primary care system.

The evidence-translation gap

Recently, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP) issued new guidelines for the treatment of mood disorders, in which lifestyle interventions are now first line treatment along with psychological interventions.

“Lifestyle changes and psychological interventions are foundational in the treatment of mood disorders. These are both recommended actions – essentially non-negotiable and to be discussed with all patients. Lifestyle changes include smoking cessation, limiting alcohol and substance misuse, instituting exercise, sleep hygiene and a healthy diet.”  Link to guidelines

What are the implications of this change for general practitioners and others involved in primary care? And what does this mean for the educational needs of clinicians? Read this commentary for more.

What is lifestyle psychiatry?

“Lifestyle Psychiatry describes the growing research evidence of the efficacy of physical exercise, diet, sleep and mind–body practices and their role in preventing and managing mental health conditions, as a stand-alone approach or in addition to other treatments. Lifestyle psychiatry is described as part of a larger lifestyle medicine movement.” Noordsy, 2019

Join us for this one of a kind international online summit as we explore the opportunities and challenges of lifestyle intervention for those presenting with mental illness, often co-morbid with cardiometabolic conditions, and as we investigate the evidence-implementation gap in practitioner education and training, and in the current and proposed innovative models of care in mental health, including in more severe mental illness in a hospital setting.
